Designer Tip #1: The Two-Thirds Rule

October 05, 2026 · J Design Gallery

Ever walk into a living room that just feels right? Designers size the sofa to about two-thirds of the wall behind it, then size the coffee table to about two-thirds of the sofa. That single ratio is why some rooms feel balanced and others feel off — and it's the fastest fix for a living room that never quite came together.

The rule: measure the wall first, then tape the sofa's footprint on the floor before falling in love with a piece. If your sofa spans roughly two-thirds of the wall, the room will feel intentional. Then pick a coffee table about two-thirds the length of the sofa, and the whole arrangement locks in.
