California King vs. King Bed: Complete Sizing Guide

September 14, 2026 · J Design Gallery

California king and standard king beds are often assumed to be the same — they're not. The difference is small on paper but can matter a lot depending on your room shape and how tall you are.

The Actual Size Difference

  • Standard King: 76 inches wide x 80 inches long
  • California King: 72 inches wide x 84 inches long

A California king is narrower but longer — four extra inches of length, four fewer inches of width, compared to a standard king.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose California King if: you or your partner are taller than 6 feet, or your bedroom is narrower but longer in shape
  • Choose Standard King if: you want maximum shoulder-to-shoulder width, or your room is more square-shaped
  • Consider sheet availability: standard king sheets are more widely available and often less expensive than California king sheets, which can be a real ongoing cost difference

Room Size Considerations

Both sizes need roughly the same total floor space, but the shape of the footprint differs slightly. Measure your room and leave at least 24–30 inches of clearance around the bed on walking sides for comfortable movement.
