Measure twice, shop once
Before you fall in love with anything, measure your space and any doorways or stairwells the piece needs to pass through. Leave at least 30-36 inches of walking room around the sofa, and don't forget to measure the diagonal path to the room — that's usually the tightest turn a large piece has to make.
Go for a loveseat or apartment-size sofa

Choose slim, exposed legs
Sofas with visible legs — rather than a skirt that touches the floor — let light pass underneath, which visually opens up the room. This one trick does more for a small space than almost anything else.
Pick lighter fabrics and colors
Dark, heavy fabrics can make a sofa feel bigger than it is. Lighter neutrals, performance weaves, and subtle textures keep the piece from dominating the room visually.
