Measuring wrong is the number one reason furniture gets returned or refused at the door. It takes ten extra minutes and saves a lot of hassle — here's how to do it right before you order.
1. Measure the room itself
Note the length and width of the room, and mark where doors, windows, outlets, and vents fall along the walls. This tells you how much clear floor space you actually have to work with.
2. Measure the delivery path, not just the room
This is the step people skip. Measure the front door width, hallway width, any stairwells, and door widths along the path the furniture needs to travel — including tight turns. A sofa that fits the room can still get stuck in a hallway corner.
3. Check ceiling height for tall pieces
If you're buying a tall sectional back, a china cabinet, or anything with real height, measure ceiling clearance too, especially for stairwells with low landings.
4. Mock up the footprint with tape
Use painter's tape on the floor to outline the exact width and depth of the piece you're considering. This single trick catches more sizing mistakes than staring at a tape measure ever will — you can walk around it and see how it actually feels in the room.
5. Leave room to move
As a rule of thumb, leave 30–36 inches of walking clearance around major pieces, and at least 18 inches between a sofa and coffee table.
6. Bring your measurements in
Write down your room dimensions and delivery path measurements and bring them to the showroom — our design consultants can help you confirm a piece will fit before you buy, not after.
