Recliner Chair Buying Guide: Types, Features & What to Look For

September 14, 2026 · J Design Gallery

A good recliner earns its place in a room for a decade or more, so it's worth understanding what actually separates a comfortable, durable chair from one that squeaks and sags within a year.

Manual vs. Power Recliners

Manual recliners use a side handle or push-back mechanism — simple, reliable, and don't need to be near an outlet. Fewer moving parts means fewer things that can eventually break.

Power recliners adjust with the push of a button, often with independent headrest and footrest positioning, and sometimes built-in heat or massage. More convenient, but requires nearby power and has more components that can need service over time.

Recliner Styles

  • Wall-hugger recliners — recline forward instead of backward, needing only a few inches of clearance from the wall; ideal for smaller rooms
  • Rocker recliners — combine a gentle rocking motion with reclining function
  • Lift chairs — power-assisted chairs that help the user stand, popular for mobility support
  • Oversized recliners — deeper seats and wider frames built for larger body types or extra lounging room

What to Check Before Buying

  1. Test the recline action — it should move smoothly without catching or excessive force
  2. Check seat depth — your knees should clear the edge of the seat with your back against the cushion
  3. Frame material — hardwood frames outlast particleboard, especially under the stress of daily reclining
  4. Upholstery — performance fabric or top-grain leather holds up better than basic fabric under frequent use
