Sectional Sofa Buying Guide: Shapes, Sizes & What to Check

September 14, 2026 · J Design Gallery

A sectional sofa is often the single biggest decision in furnishing a living room — it defines the layout, the flow, and how many people can actually sit comfortably. Here's how to choose the right shape and size without guessing.

L-Shaped vs. U-Shaped vs. Modular

  • L-shaped (chaise sectional): The most common and versatile option, fitting well in corners and rectangular rooms
  • U-shaped: Maximizes seating for larger families or frequent entertaining, but needs a genuinely large room to avoid feeling cramped
  • Modular sectionals: Individual pieces that can be rearranged or added to over time — ideal if you move often or want flexibility as your space changes

Measuring Your Space Correctly

Before falling in love with a sectional online, measure your actual room and mark out the sectional's footprint with painter's tape on the floor. Leave at least 30–36 inches of walking space around the piece, and double-check doorway and stairwell widths — large sectionals sometimes need to be delivered in separate pieces and assembled inside the room.

Chaise Orientation Matters

Most L-shaped sectionals come in "left-facing" or "right-facing" configurations, referring to which side the chaise (the extended lounging section) sits on when facing the sofa. Get this wrong and your whole room layout can feel off — sketch your room first to confirm which orientation fits your space and traffic flow.

What to Check Before Buying

  1. Cushion fill — high-density foam or down-blend cushions hold their shape longer than basic poly-fill
  2. Frame construction — kiln-dried hardwood frames resist warping and sagging far better than particleboard
  3. Modular connectors — if considering a modular set, check how sections attach (clips vs. Velcro vs. none) for stability
  4. Fabric durability — performance fabrics resist stains and wear better in high-traffic households
